About this project
ExposeSanAngelo is a citizen-funded public records project. We file open records requests, publish what comes back, and keep a sourced record of what San Angelo's government actually did and when. We are not affiliated with the City of San Angelo, Tom Green County, or any candidate, party, or developer.
What we do
Three things, and deliberately not more:
- File records requests. Under the Texas Public Information Act, in the Foundation's name, so residents can ask questions without putting their own name in front of their city government.
- Publish primary documents. Ordinances, contracts, budgets, correspondence, appraisals. The document itself, not our summary of it.
- Keep a sourced timeline. Dated council actions with vote tallies, so nobody has to reconstruct the sequence from memory a year later.
What we do not do: original reporting, endorsements, or campaign work. San Angelo already has four newsrooms doing journalism — read them. We are the filing cabinet, not the byline.
Editorial standards
Every factual claim carries a source link. If we assert a number, a date, or a vote, the link to the originating document or outlet is on the page. Our full bibliography is on the news index.
We distinguish projection from fact. A developer's valuation estimate and an appraisal district's assessed value are different things, and we label them differently.
We credit the other side of the argument. The City adopted the strongest water protection available to it — mandatory closed-loop cooling — unanimously. We say so on the water page, because leaving it out would make our own criticism easier to dismiss.
Being listed here is not an accusation. Public officials appear on this site because they participated in a public process. Where we describe an allegation, we attribute it to whoever made it.
We do not republish other outlets' work. We link out. Headlines on this site are pointers to the original publisher.
Corrections
We will get things wrong. When we do, we want to hear about it, and we would rather fix it fast than defend it.
If a figure, date, vote tally, name, or characterization on this site is inaccurate — including if you are a public official or an employee of a body we cover — write to [email protected] or use the tip form. Tell us the page, the claim, and what the correct version is. Substantive corrections are noted on the page itself, not quietly edited out.
Any official or staff member named on this site may submit a response of reasonable length, and we will publish it in full alongside the material it responds to, unedited.
How this is funded
Entirely by donations to the Move Weight Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Nobody is paid to write this site. Donations cover records copy fees, certified copies, postage, Attorney General filings, and server costs.
We take no money from developers, candidates, political committees, or anyone with business before the City of San Angelo.
| Rail | Where it goes | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Zelle — [email protected] | Move Weight Foundation nonprofit account | Available now |
| GoFundMe | Deposits directly into the Foundation's nonprofit bank account | San Angelo campaign launching |
The Foundation's existing GoFundMe funds the Miami, Oklahoma chapter. Sending San Angelo donations there would misstate what you were funding, so we are not doing it. A dedicated San Angelo campaign is being set up; until it is live, Zelle goes to the same nonprofit account. If you want to give now and want a written receipt, email [email protected].
Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Consult your own tax advisor; we cannot give tax advice.
The Foundation's other chapters
The Move Weight Foundation runs the same model in more than one place. The playbook — file records, publish documents, keep a sourced timeline — travels; the local facts do not.
Miami, Oklahoma
The Foundation's first chapter. Council meeting transcripts, a FOIA request system, crime and court records tools, and budget analysis for Miami and Ottawa County.
